Nancy Haynes
23. January – 28. February 1998

Nancy Haynes, geb. 1947 in Connecticut, lebt in Brooklyn.

By burnishing panels painted in oil, Haynes gives some of her paintings a silvery, depthless internal light that is like a reflection in sheet metal of an endless dusk. The dusk (or incipient dawn) might be symbolic: light failing (or breaking) over the world itself. But Haynes' art seems to me more withdrawn than that, more concerned with its own strictly local reality".
(ARTFORUM, September 1989)

Die Künstlerin sagt über ihre Arbeit: "An intention of my paintings is to circumscribe abstraction's mute physicality inside a discourse of the fugitive, where the fugitive serves to dismantle the architecture of somposition. Essential to the emptying out of the surface are absences that suggest a two-fold complexity and must connect both the visual and its lack. This defining absence manifests itself as a suspension, which is subtly marked by syncopes, lacunae and pauses, within an empty narrative. As artist/author, the intent of these paintings resides within the negative."

Die Aussellung dauert bis Ende Februar 1998.
